Hey there, busy heroes, photo newbies, pro snappers, and parents craving perfect bub pics! Ever zoomed in on your newborn’s fluttery eyelashes or puckered lips and thought, “I need this framed forever”—only to get a blurry mess? I’ve been there—new mum days, fumbling my phone, missing those tiny details that melt you. After 10+ years, hundreds of bubs, and workshops with world-renowned photographers (where I had to dig up the close-up tricks they skipped!). These hacks work for newborns, 1-12 month-olds, and even wiggly toddlers—whether you’re snapping at home or booking me in-person! There’s a pro twist that has clients raving, and my free 30-min masterclass video will have you snapping pro-looking images in less than 30 mins!
Why Close-Ups Steal Hearts
Those little details—fingers, lips, sleepy eyes—are pure magic, making albums or prints unforgettable. Here’s why these hacks rock:
- Fast: 2 mins to snap—no endless setup.
- Easy: Just your phone or camera—messy rooms okay!
- Wow: Gorgeous shots—mums save memories and pros will have very happy customers!
Others might say you need macro lenses or studio lights—nah, my way’s simple, real, and nails it. Let’s zoom in on that cuteness!
1. Find the Sweet Spot
- Struggle: Wrong focus = fuzzy details.
- Fix: Get close—6-12 inches from bub’s face. For newborns, aim for lips post-feed; for 6-month-olds, catch curious fingers mid-grab. Keep your phone or camera steady.
- Tip: For the phone camera, tap the screen to lock focus—those eyelashes pop! For a DSLR ensure you manually set you autofocus points (the focus square/s) on those lips or hands for example!
- Safety Tip: Always have a hand or adult nearby—bubs can roll suddenly, especially on beds or cushions.

2. Light It Softly
- Struggle: Harsh light flattens tiny features.
- Fix: Use a window’s soft glow—morning or late afternoon. Angle newborns so light brushes their cheeks, or light toddlers’ eyes for a sparkly stare. Toss a blanket down to cover any mess—keeps it cozy.
- Tip: Avoid flash—it startles bubs and washes out details and causes an unnatural white glow in the eyes!

3. Frame the Detail
- Struggle: Busy backgrounds steal the show.
- Fix: Zoom in tight—fill the frame with tiny hands or sleepy eyes. For 12-month-olds, catch chubby cheeks mid-smile. Use a plain blanket or parent’s shoulder as a backdrop.
- Tip: Portrait mode blurs clutter—details shine!
4. The Pro Secret – The Calm Close-Up (Tease!)
- Struggle: Fussy bubs = no clear shots.
- Fix: Here’s my trick: a quick baby-whispering move—like a gentle hum or rock—settles them just enough to catch that perfect lip curl or yawn. Clients will call you the baby whisperer! My $37 Baby Whispering Mini Course dives into this magic!
