Whether you’re a tired mum, dad, beginner, or pro, these tips will light up your newborn photos without stress. My free 30-min masterclass will have you lighting like a pro in less time than your little one’s nap!
Why Lighting Wins Hearts
Great lighting makes your newborn photos glow—highlighting bub’s delicate features and creating heart-melting keepsakes for albums or pro galleries. It’s the secret to turning simple shots into stunning memories, no fancy gear needed. These hacks deliver:
- Fast: Set up in 5 minutes—no hours fiddling.
- Easy: Use household items—no studio lights!
- Wow: Stunning shots—mums cherish memories, pros land bookings!
Others might push expensive gear or studio setups, but my approach is safe, calm, and nails it every time. Let’s light newborn photos at home for stunning results!
1. Use Soft Window Light
Struggle: Harsh or dim light flattens bub’s features.
Fix: In bub’s first 3 months, set up near a large window (9–10:30am, soft light) with a sheer curtain to diffuse rays. Lay bub on a neutral blanket, swaddled loosely if settled, for a cozy pose with their hands showing. Face bub toward the light to catch their sleepy eyes, keeping shadows soft. No curtain? Use a white bedsheet pinned up. This creates a glowing, natural look. My free 30-min masterclass has quick, super easy hacks for pro-looking images.
Tip: Soft light keeps shots timeless—mums swoon!

2. Reflect Light with a White Sheet
Struggle: Shadows make photos look dark or uneven.
Fix: Hang a white sheet opposite your window to bounce light onto bub, brightening their tiny cheeks. Lay bub on a neutral blanket (white, cream or beige), swaddled if unsettled, for older babies sit them up and position them so light hits evenly on their face. Stay close to support bub’s neck, or layer pillows around bub if not a confident sitter. Snap with your phone’s burst mode for calm expressions. My $37 Baby Whispering Mini Course builds confidence to soothe bubs for calm shoots every time! Check my wrap video for safe setups.
Tip: Smooth sheets avoid harsh shadows—pure glow!

3. Angle Light for Depth
Struggle: Flat lighting makes shots look boring.
Fix: Position bub at a 45-degree angle to the window, with light hitting one side of their face for gentle shadows that add depth. Use a blanket and swaddle loosely if settled, curling bub neatly for a cozy pose. Snap from slightly above with your phone’s 2x zoom to highlight their tiny features. Edit with my $27 Mobile Presets for vibrant pops. This setup makes shots pop without complexity.
Tip: Angle light for dimension—keeps it timeless!

4. The Pro Secret – The Lighting Lock (Tease!)
Struggle: Lighting feels tricky or shots look amateur.
Fix: Here’s my trick: soft window light, reflected sheets, and angled setups create stunning, glowing shots in minutes—it doesn’t have to be complicated! These hacks work for bub’s first 3 months and beyond, keeping photos bright and safe.
