Newborn Photography Gear + Safety Prep You Need (Professionally)

  • Camera: A DSLR or mirrorless with high-res and manual controls—lets you tweak for killer shots. No pro budget? Your phone’s fine with a steady hand!
  • Prime Lens: 35mm or 50mm—wide aperture, sharp as heck, dreamy bokeh. Check my lens post for the full scoop!
  • Light Source: Big window, soft light—free and gorgeous. Dim day? A softbox keeps it gentle and even. Check my best lighting post for the full scoop!
  • Heat Source: Crank it to 28°C (82°F)—bubs love womb warmth. Space heater or thermostat does the trick.
  • White Noise: Baby shusher or mini speaker—womb vibes calm them fast. Skip phone speakers—too quiet.
  • Sanitizer & Mask: Germ-free’s non-negotiable—hand gel and mask keep it clean.
  • Wraps: Soft, stretchy fabric—security and posing in one. Jersey or bamboo’s my go-to.
  • Backdrop: Rug or layered blankets—cozy texture, simple setup.
  • Props: Pillows, cushions—even a dog bed! Support without a beanbag.Posing Pillows: Safe, comfy positions—head angles just right.
  • Wash Cloths: Mess happens—warm cloths, not cold wipes, keep bubs happy.
  • Step Stool: High angles, flattering shots—total game changer.
  • Insurance: Covers your back—peace of mind for the win.
  • Vaccinations: Flu, whooping cough, COVID—up-to-date for bub safety.
  • Workshops: In-person or online—learn safe posing, settle skills.

Don’t skip these Basics: Essential for starting newborn photography

Handling Skills: Settling bubs is everything. Newbies often chase props and tech, but if you can’t calm a baby, those shots won’t happen. It’s less stress for bub, parents, and you—plus, it boosts your confidence knowing their needs.

Manual Mode: Pro vibes need it—control aperture, shutter, ISO. You call the shots, not the camera. Takes time, but worth it for quality.
