When to Take Photos:

The ideal time to capture newborn photos is within the first two weeks after birth. During this time, babies tend to be sleepier and more flexible, allowing for easier posing. Newborns also retain some of their womb-like features, such as curly positions and soft, smooth skin, which makes for adorable photographs.

If your baby is older then two weeks, please do not worry, I have personally photographed babies up to 8 weeks old and have them sleeping is adorable poses, and although the sessions are run differently, you’ll capture adorable images while they are still so little.

Where to Get Photos:

There are several options for getting newborn photos taken. You can hire a professional newborn photographer who specializes in capturing those precious early moments. Alternatively, you can take the photos yourself at home, with the help of a family member or friend, or even consider a DIY newborn photoshoot.

Camera Equipment for Newborn Photography:

While professional photographers often have specialized gear, you can still capture beautiful newborn photos with your phone or DSLR or mirrorless camera. It’s essential to have a lens with a wide aperture, such as a 35mm or 50mm, to achieve that soft, dreamy background. Good lighting, whether natural or artificial, is also crucial for creating stunning images.

Newborn Props and Accessories:

Props and accessories add charm and personality to newborn photos. Popular choices include soft blankets, wraps, headbands, hats, baskets, and cute outfits. Ensure that any props used are safe, comfortable, and age-appropriate for your baby. Our personal favourite is Princess and the Pea Newborn Props.

Types of Newborn Photoshoots:

There are various types of newborn photoshoots to consider, such as lifestyle sessions, in which the baby is photographed in their natural environment, or stunning studio sessions, where a controlled environment with specialized lighting and backdrops is used. The studio setting provides endless opportunities to create truly breathtaking photographs.

Tips for Newborn Photography:

  • Plan the photoshoot during the baby’s usual nap time to increase the chances of them being sleepy and cooperative.
  • Keep the room warm and comfortable to ensure the baby’s comfort.
  • Use a noise machine or soft music to create a soothing environment.
  • Be patient and allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, and soothing the baby during the photoshoot.

Newborn Photography Safety:

Safety should always be the top priority when photographing newborns. Ensure the following safety measures:

  • Never leave the baby unattended or unsupported in high places or props.
  • Use composite techniques or Photoshop to create the illusion of certain poses, instead of attempting risky poses.
  • Avoid using any props or accessories that could potentially harm the baby.
  • Keep the baby’s head and neck supported at all times.

Keeping Baby Happy and Sleepy:

To keep your baby happy and sleepy during the photoshoot, follow these tips:

  • Feed the baby before the session to ensure they are content.
  • Create a calm and soothing environment with soft lighting and gentle music.
  • Use gentle touch and patience to soothe the baby if they become fussy.
  • Take breaks as needed to allow the baby to rest and reset.

When Not to Take Newborn Photos:

There are instances when it is not advisable to take newborn photos, such as when the baby is unwell, irritable, or has specific medical conditions. It’s important to prioritize the baby’s well-being and reschedule the photoshoot if necessary.
