The Secret to Capturing Candid Newborn Moments (Even When They’re Wide Awake!)
Hey, knackered mums, photo beginners, and pros! Ever tried to catch your bub’s adorable yawns or tiny stretches, only to end up with a pic that feels… well, a bit staged? I’ve been there—new mum days, chasing that perfect “natural” shot, but it just wasn’t happening. After 10+ years, hundreds of bubs, and workshops with world-renowned photographers (where I still had to figure out the candid magic they didn’t teach), I’ve cracked the secret to snapping candid moments that feel real and heart-melting. And don’t worry if your bub’s past the newborn stage—these tricks work for 1-12 months and even tricky toddlers tearing around! There’s a pro twist that wows clients (my course spills it!), and my free 30-min masterclass video will have you snapping pro-looking images in less than 30 mins!
Why Candid Shots Are Pure Magic
Candid pics capture the real stuff—those fleeting, unposed moments that make your heart skip. They’re the ones you’ll treasure forever, and the best part? They don’t need perfect poses or fancy setups. Here’s why these hacks are game-changers:
- Quick: 1 min to snap—no waiting for the “right” moment.
- Simple: No props or gear—just you and your bub.
- Wow: Authentic pics that glow—mums save memories, pros wow their clients!
Others might say wait for the perfect nap or splurge on backdrops—nah, my way’s cozy, real, and nails it. Let’s capture those candid cuties!
1. Follow the Light (And Make It Work for You)
- Struggle: Flat, dull pics—no life or sparkle.
- Fix: Move to a window—natural light makes everything pop. For newborns, place them on a soft blanket near the light. For older bubs (6 months+), try floor play near the window—they’ll glow as they wiggle!
- Tip: Shoot into the light for dreamy silhouettes—works for newborns to toddlers! If your bub’s a bit older, let them explore a sunbeam on the floor—snap their curiosity in action.

2. Catch the Action (Without the Blur)
- Struggle: Bub’s always moving—blurry mess.
- Fix: Use burst mode on your phone—hold the shutter, snap a bunch, pick the best. For toddlers, let them roam and snap mid-giggle! If you’re using a DSLR, set a fast shutter speed (1/250 or higher) to freeze the fun.
- Tip: Focus on the eyes—lock it, then let them move. For newborns, catch those tiny hand twitches or yawns—pure joy!
3. Play the Waiting Game (But Not Too Long!)
- Struggle: Missed moments—bub’s cute face changes in a blink.
- Fix: Keep your camera ready—phone in hand, DSLR on a strap. For newborns, watch for sleepy stretches or that post-feed bliss. For toddlers, have a toy or snack nearby—snap the glee when they grab it!
- Tip: Don’t force it—let the moment unfold. Candid magic happens when you’re patient but quick!

4. Get Low (Or High!)
- Struggle: Same-old angles—pics feel boring.
- Fix: Change your perspective—get on the floor for eye-level shots or climb a chair for an overhead view. For newborns, an overhead snap of their swaddle cocoon is adorable. For toddlers, floor-level captures their world perfectly.
- Tip: Mix it up—try both angles in one session for variety without fuss.
5. The Pro Secret – Timing Is Everything (Tease!)
- Struggle: Good, but not “wow”—missing that candid spark.
- Fix: Here’s the trick: watch for the moment right after your bub exhales. That’s when they’re most relaxed, and you’ll catch those peaceful, natural expressions that melt hearts. This ties into my baby-whispering techniques—calming bubs and reading their cues—which my course dives deep into!
