Ever struggled to showcase your newborn photography skills and wow clients with a portfolio? I’ve been there—newbie days, snapping pics, stressed my work wouldn’t impress. After 10+ years and hundreds of bubs, I’ve got super easy tips to build a newborn photography portfolio that books clients fast. These hacks work for beginners, pros, and even mums starting small—whether you’re shooting at home or building a studio! My free 30-min masterclass video will have you shooting like a pro in less than 30 mins!
Why a Portfolio Wins Clients
A stunning portfolio means more bookings, happy clients, and gorgeous shots. These hacks deliver:
- Fast: 1 day to start—no endless shoots.
- Easy: Just your phone—no fancy gear needed!
- Wow: Packed calendar—mums save memories, pros get happy customers!
Others might say you need pro studios or paid sites—nah, my way’s simple and nails it. Let’s build that client-winning portfolio!
1. Shoot Free Model Calls
Struggle: No photos to show clients.
Fix: Run a “model call” for free newborn shoots at 9-9.30am when bubs settle best (pic below of a cozy newborn session!). Post in local Facebook groups – parents will go crazy applying for their baby to be chosen! e.g: “2 FREE Newborn Model Call Shoots for June! DM name, email, phone, baby’s DOB, photo. Closes [date]. Offer 3-4 free digital files, upsell all files for $100+. Get consent to share pics. Please ensure you follow the Facebook group rules.
Tip: Use neutral or earthy-toned wraps for a timeless vibe!

2. Curate 5–10 Heart-Melting Shots
Struggle: Overloaded portfolios confuse clients.
Fix: Pick 5–10 best photos showing variety—newborn close-ups, sibling cuddles, and sleepy poses. If you are starting out and don’t have editing software yet, try Editing with free apps like Snapseed if costly software isn’t in reach yet. For 6-month-olds, capture playful smiles in neutral or earthy-toned rompers, keeping sessions short to avoid overstimulation. Arrange shots in a Google Photos album if a Photography gallery platform isn’t within budget. I personally love using Pic-Time to deliver client galleries and sell prints/products but there are so many great options available.
Tip: Start with your strongest shot to grab attention!
3. Share on Social Media
Struggle: Clients can’t find your work.
Fix: Post one portfolio pic daily on social media: “Loving this newborn glow in a sage muslin wrap! Book your session, DM me! #newbornphotography” (pic below of a sibling shot!). Share a tip (e.g., “Shoot at 9am for calm bubs”). Tag a newborn clothing biz for buzz—it subtly shifts focus from being a newbie.
Tip: Create an Instagram highlight with your top 5 shots—it hooks clients fast!

4. The Pro Secret – The Polish Lock (Tease!)
Struggle: Amateur shots lose bookings.
Fix: Here’s my trick: a polished portfolio with soft edits and calm bubs wins clients every time—my method booked me solid in weeks! My $27 Mobile Presets polish your mobile phone shots for pro portfolios, inspired by my 10+ years perfecting bubs! For calming bubs, my $37 Baby Whispering Mini Course shares magic, inspired by Sheyne Rowley, the Australian Baby Whisperer—read it here!
