Why Sleeping Newborns Win Hearts
Photos of sleeping newborns—think cozy curls or gentle smiles—create heart-melting keepsakes for albums or pro galleries. Keeping bub asleep ensures calm, timeless shots with minimal fuss for both you and your clients. These hacks deliver:
- Fast: Soothe in 5 minutes—no hours rocking.
- Easy: Use household items—no special tools needed!
- Wow: Stunning shots—mums cherish memories, pros land bookings!
For DIY parents, these tips make sleepy shots a breeze. Pros can pair them with advanced calming techniques—my mini course cover those! Others might suggest risky methods, but my approach is safe, calm, and nails it every time. Let’s keep newborns asleep for stunning photos at home!

1. Swaddle for Deep Sleep
Struggle: Bub wakes easily, ruining sleepy poses.
Fix: In bub’s first year, swaddle loosely with a neutral wrap (cream or sage) if settled, and lay them on a soft blanket near a window (9–10:30am, soft light). If they are unsettled, make sure you swaddle them firmly (not tight) with a stretch fabric wrap. See our wrap video here for more tips.
Keep the room very warm (25°C or higher) if bub’s in a onesie with no layers to ensure they stay cozy and asleep. Gently sway bub before placing them down to deepen sleep. Snap with your phone’s burst mode to catch their calm face.

2. Use White Noise for Calm
Struggle: Noises disrupt bub’s sleep during shots.
Fix: Play soft white noise (e.g., from a phone app or fan) to mimic womb sounds. Place bub on a neutral blanket, swaddled if settled, and keep the noise low but steady. If they aren’t settling, don’t be afraid to turn up the volume! Remember, when baby was in the womb the volume is equivalent to a vacuum cleaner! Louder white noise can be very calming to a baby.
Snap with your phone’s portrait mode for a dreamy blur.
Tip: White noise works magic—pure calm!

3. Feed Before Shooting
Struggle: Hungry bubs fuss and won’t sleep.
Fix: Feed bub 10–15 minutes before your session (e.g., 9am) to promote deep sleep. Make sure you take the time to burp baby – to avoid an upset gassy baby. Have a burp cloth nearby for any spit ups!
Pose gently to avoid waking. Snap with your phone’s 2x zoom for sleepy details. Edit with my $27 Mobile Presets for vibrant pops.
Tip: Full tummies mean dreamy shots—timeless charm!

4. The Pro Secret – The Sleep Lock (Tease!)
Struggle: Keeping bub asleep feels impossible or shots look staged.
