Why Natural Light Wins Hearts
Natural light makes newborn photos glow—highlighting tiny toes and soft cheeks—for heart-melting albums or pro galleries. Simple setups create timeless shots with minimal fuss for both you and your clients. No big bulky lighting equipment to learn how to use – let’s go all nat-u-ral! These hacks deliver:
- Fast: Set up in 5 minutes—no hours adjusting.
- Easy: Use household items—no expensive gear needed!
- Wow: Stunning shots—mums cherish memories, pros land bookings!
For DIY parents, these tips make light magic happen at home. Pros can pair them with advanced techniques—my course covers those! Others might push costly lights, but my approach is accessible to everyone and so easy to implement. Let’s use natural light for stunning newborn photos at home!
1. Shoot Near a Window
Struggle: Photos look shadowy or too harsh.
Fix: In bub’s first year, place bub on a neutral blanket (cream or beige) near a window that’s in the shade (no direct light shining in) for soft light. Swaddle loosely with a stretch fabric wrap if settled, or firmly if unsettled, to keep bub cozy. Keep the room warm (25°C or higher) if bub’s in a onesie with no layers to ensure comfort. Snap with your phone’s burst mode for glowing shots.
Tip: Sheers and white sheets create dreamy soft light!

2. Diffuse Light with a Sheer Curtain
Struggle: Direct sunlight washes out bub’s features.
Fix: Hang a sheer white curtain over the window to soften light. Lay bub on a soft blanket, swaddled if settled, and feed 10–15 minutes before (burp to avoid fussiness). Play soft white noise (louder if unsettled, like a vacuum cleaner) to keep bub calm. Snap with your phone’s portrait mode for a dreamy blur. My $37 Baby Whispering Mini Course builds confidence to soothe bubs for calm shoots every time! Check my wrap video here for setups.
Tip: Diffused light adds charm—It’s a next level professional look!
3. Use a Reflector for Even Glow
Struggle: Shadows hide bub’s cute details.
Fix: Use a white sheet or poster board as a reflector opposite the window to bounce light onto bub’s face. Place bub on a neutral blanket (neutrals, earthy tones or white), swaddled loosely if settled, in a warm room (25°C+ for no layers). Snap with your phone’s 2x zoom for soft details. Edit with my $27 Mobile Presets for vibrant pops.
Tip: Reflectors make faces glow—timeless charm!

4. The Pro Secret – The Light Lock (Tease!)
Struggle: Natural light feels tricky or shots look flat.
Fix: Here’s my trick: golden hours, sheer curtains, shooting in the shade and reflectors create stunning, glowing photos in minutes—it doesn’t have to be complicated!
