Overwhelmed picking props for your newborn’s photos, worried they’ll clutter or steal the show? I’ve been there—new mum days, drowning in blankets and baskets, knackered and stressing my face off to make my bub’s shots look pro. After 10+ years, hundreds of bubs, and workshops with world-renowned photographers, I’ve cracked the secrets to choosing props that shine. The thing is most people overthink it! Keep it simple! These hacks work for newborns, 1-12 month-olds, and even wiggly toddlers. My free 30-min masterclass video will have you shooting like a pro in less than 30 mins!
Why Props Make Your Shots Pop
The right props frame bub’s charm—soft textures, gentle colors—for pics that fill your first year album with love. These hacks deliver:
- Fast: 2 mins to set up—no endless fiddling.
- Easy: Just household items—no fancy gear needed!
- Wow: Gorgeous shots—mums save memories, pros get very happy customers!
Others might say you need pricey studio props—nah, my way’s safe, simple, and nails it. Let’s pick those perfect props!
1. Stick to Soft Blankets
Struggle: Bulky props overwhelm bub.
Fix: Use a soft, neutral blanket (white or beige) as your base, laid near a window, parent nearby. For 8-week-olds, drape loosely for texture, keeping bub secure. For toddlers, add a blanket they can hold, parent close (like in the pic below!).
Tip: Wash blankets before use for bub’s sensitive skin!
Safety Tip: Keep bub on a flat surface, adult’s hand ready—super safe!

2. Use Simple Baskets, Bassinets or Bowls
Struggle: Unsafe props risk wobbles.
Fix: Choose a sturdy, shallow basket or wooden bowl, lined with a blanket, parent holding. For newborns, ensure it’s stable; for 6-month-olds, let them sit with support. Avoid tall or tippy items.
Tip: Place a small pillow inside for extra coziness and support!

3. Add a Personal Touch
Struggle: Props feel generic, not special.
Fix: Include a parent’s scarf or a sibling’s teddy for 12-month-olds, parent nearby. For newborns, wrap in a family heirloom blanket post-feed (demo here). Keep it minimal to highlight bub.
Tip: Use soft, muted colors to keep bub as the star!

4. The Pro Secret – The Prop Lock (Tease!)
Struggle: Props distract from bub’s charm.
Fix: Here’s my trick: one soft, safe prop—blanket or basket—plus a calm bub keeps shots stunning. My $37 Baby Whispering Mini Course shares calming magic, inspired by my chat with Sheyne Rowley, the Australian Baby Whisperer—read it here—and my 10+ years settling every bub I’ve shot!
